About Us
UAR was established in 2005, and we have saved in excess of 5,000 animals. We rescue around 1,000 animals per year from "death row" at area shelters. These animals are given proper medical treatment, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and live in either foster homes or our shelter while we diligently seek permanent, loving homes for them. We have a strict adoption process which helps us ensure the animals we place will never be homeless again. Our funding includes a few small grants, but most of our funding is received through private donations from concerned citizens or raised through volunteer fundraisers.
Approximately 14,000 animals enter our home county shelter each year, and of those, around 11,000 are euthanized due to being homeless. The space in any shelter is limited, and unfortunately the population of unwanted animals far exceeds the space available to house them. We work diligently to help educate the public on low-cost spay neuter options because we realize that the root issue which creates this overpopulation is uncontrolled breeding of animals. We often hear comments from those who believe the animals they breed or allow to be born are wanted, because they were able to find homes for them. The fact is that 11,000 animals a year in our home county alone do not have homes - and this is what we would like everyone to consider. Each animal bred and sold means there is one more person who will not consider finding a pet at the local shelter. Did you know that one in four animals entering county shelters are pure bred? You can find almost anything you are looking for at a shelter.
